What Is the Quran? Definition, Meaning & Complete Guide
The Quran is the holy scripture of Islam โ the direct, literal word of Allah revealed to the Prophet Muhammad ๏ทบ through the Angel Jibreel over approximately 23 years.
What Does "Quran" Mean?
The word Quran (ุงููุฑุขู) comes from the Arabic root q-r-a (ูุฑุฃ), meaning "to read" or "to recite."
Scholars define the Quran as: the speech of Allah, revealed to Muhammad ๏ทบ in both meaning and wording, transmitted through unbroken chains, preserved in the Mushaf, recited in worship.
Every part of this definition matters:
- It is the speech of Allah โ not the words of Muhammad ๏ทบ or any human
- It was revealed โ brought down from Allah, not authored or composed
- Both meaning and wording โ no translation of the Quran is considered "the Quran." The Quran is the Arabic text only
- Transmitted through unbroken chains โ every word verified through thousands of witnesses across every generation
- Recited in worship โ the only book in the world whose recitation is itself an act of worship
How Was the Quran Revealed?
The Quran was not revealed all at once. It came down over 23 years โ from 610 CE, when the first revelation came to the Prophet ๏ทบ in the Cave of Hira, until just before his death in 632 CE.
The first verses revealed were the opening five verses of Surah Al-Alaq: "Read in the name of your Lord who created โ created man from a clinging substance. Read, and your Lord is the Most Generous โ who taught by the pen โ taught man that which he knew not." (Quran 96:1โ5)
The Quran was revealed gradually so that the Prophet ๏ทบ could memorize and convey each portion, so believers could implement guidance step by step, and so verses could respond to real events as they unfolded.
- Makki Surahs โ revealed before the Prophet's migration. Focus on Tawheed (monotheism), faith, and the afterlife
- Madani Surahs โ revealed after migration. Focus on law, community, family, and detailed Islamic practice
The Structure of the Quran
| Division | Count | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Surahs (chapters) | 114 | Arranged by the Prophet ๏ทบ under divine guidance |
| Ayat (verses) | 6,236 | The word ayah means "sign" |
| Juz (parts) | 30 | One Juz per day = complete Quran in a month |
| Pages (Madani Mushaf) | 604 | 15 lines per page |
What Does the Quran Contain?
The Quran is not a sequential narrative. It is a living guide addressing faith and life in a unique way.
- Tawheed โ The Oneness of Allah. Every Surah, in some way, returns to the absolute uniqueness of Allah.
- Stories of the Prophets โ The Quran tells the stories of 25 Prophets by name: Adam, Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, Isa (Jesus), and Muhammad ๏ทบ.
- Laws and Guidance โ Detailed rulings on prayer, fasting, Zakat, Hajj, marriage, inheritance, and justice.
- The Day of Judgment and the Afterlife โ Vivid descriptions of death, the Day of Judgment, Paradise (Jannah), and Hell (Jahannam).
- Moral and Ethical Guidance โ Instructions on honesty, justice, kindness, and treatment of family and the poor.
Why Is the Quran Unique?
The Quran makes a challenge no other scripture makes:
"And if you are in doubt about what We have sent down upon Our Servant, then produce a Surah like it." (Quran 2:23)
This challenge โ the I'jaz al-Quran (Miraculous Nature of the Quran) โ has stood for 1,400 years unanswered.
- Memorized word-for-word by millions of people in every generation for 1,400+ years
- Every copy worldwide โ from Jakarta to New York โ is identical, word for word
- The only scripture that claims and has maintained complete textual preservation
- Its Arabic is recognized even by non-Muslim scholars as the pinnacle of Arabic literary excellence
- Revealed to a man who could not read or write โ one of the greatest proofs of its divine origin
How Is the Quran Preserved?
Memorization (Hifz): The Prophet ๏ทบ memorized every verse and instructed his Companions to do the same. This chain of human memory โ called the Isnad โ has continued unbroken to the present day. Today, millions of people worldwide have memorized all 604 pages word for word. A person who completes this is called a Hafiz.
Written Text: The Prophet ๏ทบ had scribes write each verse as it was revealed. After his death, Caliph Abu Bakr (RA) compiled these into one Mushaf. Caliph Uthman (RA) later standardized and distributed copies. The Mushaf of Uthman is the basis of every Quran in the world today.
The Quran and Muslims Today
For Muslims, the Quran is not a historical document. It is a living, daily reality:
- Surah Al-Fatiha is recited at least 17 times per day in Salah
- The Quran is read at births, deaths, marriages, illnesses, and celebrations
- In Ramadan, Muslims aim to complete the entire Quran at least once
- The Prophet ๏ทบ said: "The best among you are those who learn the Quran and teach it." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
